Online casino basics in Ontario
Online casino play is regulated in Ontario. This page explains who runs the market and how to check whether a site belongs to it.
How the market works
The opening date of Ontario's regulated online gambling market was April 4, 2022. Two separate bodies have a role in it. iGaming Ontario runs the market, conducting and managing it. Oversight belongs to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, known as the AGCO. Keeping the two roles apart means the body that manages the market is not the one that regulates it.
The legal age for online gambling in Ontario is 19, the same as for the province's casinos. Players must also be physically located in Ontario to play. Both conditions apply to anyone using a site in the regulated market.
Checking a site
On igamingontario.ca, iGaming Ontario publishes a list of the online gambling sites that are regulated. Sites absent from it do not belong to Ontario's regulated market. The list is the reference to check before using any site. This page does not recommend any operator.
The provincial agency, Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, runs OLG.ca as its online site. Self-exclusion through BetGuard, covered below, includes OLG.ca as well as the other regulated sites.
Stopping play
Through BetGuard (betguard.ca), a person can self-exclude from every Ontario gambling site that is regulated, OLG.ca included. iGaming Ontario has run it from May 14, 2026. A person sets a custom term or chooses 6 months, 1 year or 5 years. Land-based casinos are outside its reach.
OLG's My PlayBreak is a self-chosen ban from Ontario casinos, set at 1 to 5 years, 6 months or 3 months. Setup is done by on-site staff, at a PlaySmart Centre, or by phoning 1-800-387-0098 for the OLG Support Centre. Once a term is set, it cannot be cancelled ahead of time.
